Somewhat sweeter in style with a barely noticeable tartness.

In March 2016, co-founders Bryan McCormick and Noel Garcia were introduced through mutual friends. They made it official in April and immediately started brewing on a one-barrel system. After hearing about the Barnone project at Agritopia, Noel called Joe Johnston to see if there were any spots left. Thankfully there was and three days later it was a done deal! While construction on Barnone continues, Noel & Bryan upgraded to a 10-barrel system at their production facility and are cranking out beers in anticipation for their grand opening in November.

Des Moines IPA proudly represents the Hawkeye State in the category of American IPA, a favorite of beer connoisseurs all across the country.

Thomas Beck Black IPA

This dark beer pays homage to Des Moines’ history as a late 19th century coal town. Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Don’t let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA.

Capital Gold, Golden Lager

Glowing like the Iowa Capitol dome in Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, this golden lager is brewed with time-honored German brewing methods. Its slightly sweet, bready, malty flavor is balanced perfectly by traditional German noble hops with medium-low hop bitterness. Like building the magnificent 23-karat gold leaf Iowa Capitol dome itself, this beer can’t be rushed. We create it with the finest domestic and imported German two-row barley malt and noble German hops as well as traditional lager yeast. This delicate beauty undergoes a lagering period of three to four weeks after initial fermentation to bring out the best this beer has to offer. The result is a beer which, much like Iowa, has something for everyone — satisfying to the experienced craft beer drinker, yet welcoming to those new to the world of craft beer.

Iowa has scores of people of English descent and a long history of railroad and riverboat travel, so it’s a perfect place for a porter beer. Long before airline check-in counters, the men who carried traveler’s bags to and from trains and boats were called “porters.” These men supposedly favored this kind of dark ale so much that the style of beer became known as “porter.”

Blue Corn Lager, with Peppers

It seems natural for Iowa-based Confluence to offer a corn-based brew. But while Iowa corn makes great bourbon, it’s not so good for beer. So we use open-pollinated, heritage organic blue corn grown in New Mexico. First we perform a cereal mash by boiling the milled blue corn to expose the starches. The resulting purple porridge is then mashed conventionally with barley malt causing the color to magically disappear and creating a super sweet, almost clear wort. The entire wort is boiled and we add enough Saaz hops for bittering without overwhelming the blue corn flavor. It’s then fermented with German lager yeast and lagered as normal. The resulting beer is big for its style and refreshing on warm days with higher alcohol content than the classic American pilsner.

We started with American two-row barley malt, Belgian pilsner malt and just a touch of specialty caramel malt. Then we added a blend of hops — including Citra (the star of our popular South Side Citra Ale), Crystal and Simcoe. Snake Bite is a lager mixed with apple cider and cranberry juice post-fermentation. A bit like a cider but not quite as sweet, this is balanced, refreshing, and very drinkable. Fangs for drinking!

My great-great-grandfather from the 1600s was the captain of a ship in England. He was also a bit of a gambler. As legend has it, he won a brewery during a high-stakes card game, which led him to start crafting his own beers. He began brewing beer on the ships he sailed. This allowed him to travel further than other vessels because beer stayed fresh during long journeys. The story goes that his beer was even consumed on a fleet of ships he commanded that transported some of the earliest settlers to America.
